About Maro
Maro is a small village, located 55 kilometres west Malaga and
near the border of the Granada province of Granada, situated at
the foothills of a Natural Park, the Sierra Almijara. Fertile land
devoted to fruit and vegetable cultivation surrounds the village
which stretches down towards the sea, a wonderful scenery in which
Maro seems a little spot lost on the map. Here you will find quiet
and peace in a clean environment. Within its boundaries are the
Nerja Caves (in some opinions Maro caves would be a more correct
name!) a truly miracle of nature. The Maro cliffs are another eyecather,
more information below.

The Maro cliffs
The Maro cliffs are situated at the mouth of the Barranco de Maro
(Maro Ravine), also known as the barranco de la Coladilla-Cazadores.
You can access the cliffs past kilometre 294 of the N-340 in direction
Nerja-Almeria, where you will enter the old national road immediately
before the beginning of a bend. Carry on for about 300 metres, go
left before passing the bridge and go down to the Barranco Maro
via a a track in bad condition (only 4x4 vehicles should try this!).
From here you can see the Acueducto del Aguila (Eagle´s Aqueduct),
still in perfect condition, and built in the last century to carry
water to the mills of the old San Joaquín sugar factory in
Maro. Upon arrival at an "apero" (tools shed), the track
turns into a path, which it is only possible to descend on foot
and wearing sports shoes, surrounded by sugar-cane and sub-tropical
crops. Continue left until you reach a small building from which
the path begins, which takes you down to his small yet pretty cove
of rounded rocks. The total length of the route is just a bit more
than a kilometre.
Another suggestion would be to carry on over the bridge instead
of choosing left, taking the path to the right, arriving at a fork
where you can leave your vehicle and enjoy a wonderful panorama
of shelved cliffs.
The tower of Maro
This is one of the many watchtowers that populate our coast.
From here , you will enjoy marvellous views and the opportunity
to troll around in the surroundings. The access is conveniently
indicated and located exactly at the kilometre 297 of the
N-340, where you enter a track from which you can see the
typical crops of the area and to the left an old pine grove.
When you reach a widening of the track, please continue on
foot, via the path that goes up to the tower. Lose yourselve
amongst the smells of thyme, rosemary, and other such aromatic
Mediterranean plants! The total length of the excursion is
approx. one kilometre. |

Playa de Maro
A locally famous sandy beach of considerable size, with easy
access and very popular during festive season. Find yourself
the Hotel Playamaro and from there the road that leeds to
the sea. There is small square with little parking space (not
enough in high season, so you'd better leave you car before
getting to the square if you come in Auigust). From here you
can go down to the beach, where you will also find a beach
restaurant. |
